Pinterest. Email Sometimes, 25 more horsepower and another 29 lb-ft of torque is more than just 25 more horsepower and another 29 lb-ft of torque. Sometimes, that kind of extra power and torque can transform a small, lightweight roadster into a true sports car. That 'sometimes' for Mercedes is the 2001 model year, which begins this April, when the new SLK320 hits showrooms in North America. On paper, dropping the 18-valve, 215-hp 3.2-liter V6 into the SLK's engine bay slices only 0.3 second off the car's 0-to-60-mph times, according to M-B's own numbers. That's compared with the 2001 SLK230, with its tweaked version of the 2.3-liter supercharged four for an extra 5 hp (for 190 hp) over the '00 SLK230.

Mercedes switched fuel injection from Motronic to Siemens, switched to a clutchless supercharger and changed the intake plumbing for the extra power. Mercedes claims a 0-to-60-mph time of 6.6 seconds for the new V6 SLK, compared to 6.9 for the '01 SLK230 and 7.2 seconds for the '00 SLK230. But the qualities added with the V6 are less quantifiable than performance measurements.

While the 1998-2000 SLK felt much like a big Mercedes sedan cut down to size, the '01 SLK feels tight and tossable. The new engine sharpens the SLK's reflexes. Launch it with full-throttle from a standing stop and you'll feel a more natural progression of power. Accompanying that better feel is better noise control: The SLK, for the first time, sounds more like a sports car than a cruiser, with a brrrappp to the exhaust note best experienced with the still-wonderful power foldable steel roof in the droptop position. A new six-speed gear-box, standard in all North American SLKs, is light-years better than the disappointing five-speed manual used last year. The six-speed doesn't have that transmission's balky feel or awkward shift knob, though it still falls short of the snick-snick short throws that make the Mazda Miata or Honda S2000 feel spec-ial.

The six-speed uses a single internal shift rail and closely spaced gear ratios. While the improved feel is welcome, you won't find yourself reaching for sixth until you're doing at least 80 mph. Obviously, it was designed for autobahn top speeds or high fuel economy. The old five-speed didn't help the short-on-power SLK230 at all, compared to the automatic that was originally standard equipment. Based on a short drive of the SLK320 Touch Shift automatic vs. Most of a day driving an SLK320 six-speed, we can't say that the automatic saps anything from the more torquey V6. Improved handling is more than a perception brought on by the ability to alter the car's attitude with the throttle.

For '01, Mercedes has retuned the shocks on all SLKs, and added a rear torsion-bar stabilizer, with a reinforced stabilizer on the front axle. The retuned shocks reduce spring travel by five millimeters and lower the body about one inch. A new four-spoke steering wheel, with a new button to operate the horn from any part of the airbag pad, is smaller in diameter, with narrower spokes than the 2000 SLK's steering wheel. This also contributes to the feeling that the SLK has become a better-handling car.

Steering feels quicker and more direct. Unless you switch off the ESP traction control, standard on all SLKs for 2001, you won't be able to steer via the throttle in the full sense of the term. But you'll feel the shift toward oversteer distinctly by the seat of your pants when you apply the 229 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels. In Lanzarote, on Spain's Canary Islands where we sampled the SLK320, most of the curves around the volcano and through the low mountains had wide enough radii to let us keep the car in third gear, which reveals the immensely flexible torque band. Never did we regret not having downshifted. When accelerating from stop signs, the SLK320 feels powerful in a supremely even way. The great gulf between pre- and post-supercharger activation is gone.

The only drawback is that the 320 still has a redline of just 6100 rpm, so until we got used to the SLK's newfound power, we found ourselves bumping the rev limiter a lot. When the four's compressor kicks in, the SLK feels like it's trying to get away from you, and that detracts from the sense of control, the sense of being one with the car. Thanks to that evenness and power in the way the SLK320 accelerates, the Mercedes roadster finally fits like a driving glove. With 215 hp, the SLK320 now is just 2 horses short of the non-S Porsche Boxster. But the Boxster's power feels the opposite of the SLK320's, in that it comes on in the mid- and upper ranges, and comes on oh-so subtly, so that you find yourself going faster than you thought. The SLK320's power comes on immediately, and there are no surprises in its progression.

Mercedes

Audi's TT remains the most obvious competition for the Mercedes. The SLK, after all, fits like a high-line designer glove that sacrifices a bit of fit in favor of fashion. Mercedes has upped the ante in that department, as well. The 2001 model isn't just an added engine option and a gearbox, it's a midlife facelift. Both the four and V6 models get new front and rear aprons, newly sculpted rocker panels, restyled headlights, body-color door handles, and two colors for the tail-lamp lenses-red and clear. Mercedes also has added turn signal repeaters into the side mirrors. The fuel tank is 15.8 gallons, vs.

14 for the '00. The '01 SLK has redesigned seats for better ergonomics, metallic trim in place of the '00's carbon fiber, a gear indicator in the instrument panel for the Touch Shift automatic, a new shift lever, a new overhead console, soft-return sun visors, chromed handbrake button, and the aforementioned smaller-diameter steering wheel. The overall effect is subtle, but it lifts the SLK from a kind of 'entry-level' Benz status into mainstream Mercedes luxury. Besides all those styling features, the SLK320 also gets five-spoke, 16-inch wheels; its own air dam; metal-plate door sills; power seats; telescoping steering column; wood interior trim; and combination leather and wood for the steering wheel and shift knob. Mercedes has not announced pricing yet, but based on the SLK320's price in Germany, we'd expect it to be about $48,000.

There's a bigger option list, too. In the SLK230, you can get the 320's standard power seats and telescopic steering wheel as a package. Both get an optional voice-activated digital StarTAC dual-mode telephone and CD changer, and a package with headlight washers, heated seats and Xenon headlights.

The SLK320 is also available with a sport package that offers some AMG trim, and more importantly, 17-inch wheels. But the flat-spoked, 17-inch wheels on the Euro-trim cars we drove in Lanzarote didn't look nearly as handsome as the SLK320's standard five-spoke wheels. Mercedes says the North American-spec car will get five-spoke wheels very similar to those on the European cars. If you want AMG wheels, wait for the SLK32 AMG.

Although Mercedes hasn't confirmed it, we'd expect the AMG version for the 2002 model year, before summer 2001. We don't know about the SLK yet, but the AMG version of the next-generation C-Class will get the supercharged 3.2-liter V6, good for a whopping 320 horses. Now that would really transform the SLK.
